Canal corridors should also be recognised as key features that help shape development and create distinctive places, the role waterways play in defining the character of existing settlements and providing a transition between built-up areas and the surrounding countryside. Development should respond positively to these qualities while protecting and enhancing the waterway corridor. More broadly, the Plan would benefit from recognising blue-green infrastructure as a key part of creating successful places.
